Hebrew culture experienced a renewal in medieval Spain that produced what is arguably the most powerful body of Jewish poetry written since the Bible. Fusing elements of East and West, Arabic and Hebrew, and the particular and the universal, this verse embodies an extraordinary sensuality and intense faith that transcend the limits of language, place, and time.

Peter Cole's translations reveal this remarkable poetic world to English readers in all of its richness, humor, grace, gravity, and wisdom. The Dream of the Poem traces the arc of the entire period, presenting some four hundred poems by fifty-four poets, and including a panoramic historical introduction, short biographies of each poet, and extensive notes. (The original Hebrew texts are available on the Princeton University Press Web site.) By far the most potent and comprehensive gathering of medieval Hebrew poems ever assembled in English, Cole's anthology builds on what poet and translator Richard Howard has described as "the finest labor of poetic translation that I have seen in many years" and "an entire revelation: a body of lyric and didactic verse so intense, so intelligent, and so vivid that it appears to identify a whole dimension of historical consciousness previously unavailable to us." The Dream of the Poem is, Howard says, "a crowning achievement."

The Nobel Prize winner 's classic collection of love poems.

Pablo Neruda, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, finished writing The Captain's Verses in 1952 while in exile on the island of Capri—the paradisal setting for the blockbuster film Il Postino (The Postman). Surrounded by sea, sun, and Capri's natural splendors, Neruda addressed these poems to his lover Matilde Urrutia before they were married, but didn't publish them publicly until 1963. This complete, bilingual collection has become a classic for love-struck readers around the world—passionately sensuous, and exploding with all the erotic energy of a new love.

I was a divorced US man living in central Mexico.

A SCENE:
WAS SIXTEEN-YEARS OLD TOO YOUNG?
A Farce:
That I could sexually abuse a sixteen-year old female.
The Truth:
An example of the truth: I sat down at Olivia’s taco stand; and Olivia was cold as ice; so I asked her, “Have I offended you?”
Olivia answered, “Bana.”
I said, “Oh. You know Bana?”
“She’s my niece.”
“Well, I’m sorry. She wouldn’t dance with me at the disco. She danced with others. So I left and went to my hotel and went to bed.” Olivia looked hurt and angry. I said, “I’m sorry that my leaving the disco hurt her so much. Perhaps she is too young for me. But I got involved with her and so now it’s too late. We’re emotionally attached. I have apologized to her--”
“You think Bana’s too young?”
“Well, she’s sixteen. I’m a lot older than that.”
“Do you have a problem performing sexually?”
“No,” I answered in shock.
“Well, then you're not too old.”

MY OLIVIA COMMENTARY
According to Bana’s aunt, what was wrong with my sexuality regarding young women was that I was not sexual enough.

A Mexican maxim: Proceed little by little; and you’ll get there.
It was the tortise and the hare philosopy.
Personally however, I was living on borrowed time.
Perhaps young women like Bana were too strong for old me.

SHE’S TOO STRONG

Bana played on,
While I slept in bed;
Yet little by little;
The locals all said.

Some people said,
My love was too strong;
For a girl her age,
I was all wrong.

The locals all said,
Little by little;
But I didn’t have,
Any time to twiddle.

Though love is forever,
Who has that much time?
She was in her flower,
While I was in decline.

I was weak,
While she was strong;
In her best interest,
Was it best I be gone?

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-1695) wrote her most famous prose work, La Respuesta a Sor Filotea, in 1691 in response to her bishop's injunction against her intellectual pursuits. A passionate and subversive defense of the rights of women to study, to teach, and to write, it predates by almost a century and a half serious writings on any continent about the position and education of women. Moreover, notes Ilan Stavans in his introduction, it has become "a cornerstone of Hispanic-American identity ... at once a chronicle of the tense gender relations in the Western Hemisphere, a rich portrait of the social behavior that prevailed more than a century before independence from Spain was gained in 1810, and the very first intellectual autobiography written by a criolla in a hemisphere known for its solipsism, introversion, and allergy to public confessions. Also included in this wide-ranging selection is a new translation of Sor Juana's masterpiece, the epistemological poem "Primero Sueno, " as well as revealing autobiographical sonnets, reverential religious poetry, secular love poems (which have excited speculation through three centuries), playful verses, and lyrical tributes to New World culture that are among the earliest writings celebrating the people and the customs of this hemisphere.

Sometimes referred to as the Tenth Muse of New Spain, Sor Juana, a 17th-century nun, was a literary virtuoso---penning romances, satires, epigrams, religious and secular sonnets, dramas, and a startlingly modern defense of education for women. A beautifully translated bilingual volume. 304 pages, softcover. Penguin.

"This en face annotated edition of selected writings of the Mexican poet includes the Respuesta to the Bishop of Puebla (1691) and a broad selection of her poetry and dramatic texts: nine love sonnets; segments from Primero sueSno, Villancico VI to Saint Catherine, and Loa para el auto sacramental de el divino Narciso; and Leonor's speech from the play Los empeSnos de una casa. Peden's 'Translator's Note' explains her translation strategy of 'moving backwards' towards the poet's place and time, which skillfully captures the full flavor of the baroque past. Stavans' extensive 'Introduction' and 'Suggestions for Further Reading' provide orientation to Sor Juana's masterpieces and their social and intellectual contexts. Highly recommended for classroom and general use"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.http://www.loc.gov/hlas/Collects many of the writings of Juana InGes de la Cruz, including a defense of the rights of women to participate in intellectual pursuits, and contains autobiographical sonnets, religious poetry, and love poems.

The most comprehensive English-language collection of work ever by "the greatest poet of the twentieth century--in any language" (Gabriel García Márquez)

"In his work a continent awakens to consciousness." So wrote the Swedish Academy in awarding the Nobel Prize to Pablo Neruda, the author of more than thirty-five books of poetry and one of Latin America's most revered writers, lionized during his lifetime as "the people's poet."

This selection of Neruda's poetry, the most comprehensive single volume available in English, presents nearly six hundred poems, scores of them in new and sometimes multiple translations, and many accompanied by the Spanish original. In his introduction, Ilan Stavans situates Neruda in his native milieu as well as in a contemporary English-language one, and a group of new translations by leading poets testifies to Neruda's enduring, vibrant legacy among English-speaking writers and readers today.

This bilingual volume is the definitive collection of the poetry of Pablo Neruda, the 1971 Nobel Prize winner and one of the most profoundly influential poets of the twentieth century. His love poems are earthy and transcendent, and his political poems are the work of a man as incisive, impassioned, and ferociously intelligent as he was sensual. Ben Belitt has drawn the 138 selections in Five Decades from all of Neruda's major works, including the early volumes Residence on Earth, General Song, Elemental Odes, Voyages and Homecomings, Book of Vagaries, A Hundred Love Sonnets, Black Island Memorial, and the later The Hands of Day, World's End, and Skystones.

Against the backdrop of Isla Negra -- the sea and wind, the white sand with its scattering of delicate wild flowers, the hot sun and salty smells of the Pacific -- Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda sets these joyfully sensual poems in celebration of his love. The subject of that love: Matilde Urrutia de Neruda, the poet's "beloved wife."

As popular in the Hispanic world as the poet's renowned Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair, One Hundred Love Sonnets has never before been published in its entirety in English translation. The reason for this astonishing neglect may lie in the historical circumstances that surrounded Neruda's "discovery " by English-speaking readers. In the United States he came to popularity during the turmoil of the sixties, when Americans needed a politically committed poet, and much of Neruda's canon answered that need. But, in his native Chile and throughout Latin America, Neruda has always been cherished as dearly for the earthly sensuality and eroticism of his love poetry as for his statements of political belief. To know this work, then is to understand the poet's art more thoroughly.

This remarkable collection, which won the 1986 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry, includes most of the poems from each of Derek Walcott's seven prior books of verse and all of his long autobiographical poem, "Another Life." The 1992 Nobel Laureate in Literature, Walcott has been producing--for several decades--a poetry with all the beauty, wisdom, directness, and narrative force of our classic myths and fairy tales, and in this hefty volume readers will find a full record of his important endeavor. "Walcott's virutes as a poet are extraordinary," James Dickey wrote in The New York Times Book Review. "He could turn his attention on anything at all and make it live with a reality beyond its own; through his fearless language it becomes not only its acquired life, but the real one, the one that lasts . . . Walcott is spontaneous, headlong, and inventive beyond the limits of most other poets now writing."

The first book of poems by Pizarnik to be published in its entirety in the U.S., poetry at the edge of impossibility.

“An aura of legendary prestige surrounds the work of Alejandra Pizarnik,” writes César Aira. Her last collection to be published before her suicide in 1972, A Musical Hell is the first book of poems by Pizarnik to be published in its entirety in the U.S. Pizarnik writes at the edge of poetic impossibility, opening with a blues singer, expanding into silence, and closing into a theater of shadows and songs of the drowned.

Sensual, earthy love poems that formed the basis for the popular movie Il Postino, now in a beautiful gift book perfect for weddings, Valentine's Day, anniversaries, or just to say "I love you!"

Charged with sensuality and passion, Pablo Neruda's love poems are the most celebrated of the Nobel Prize winner's oeuvre, captivating readers with earthbound images and reveling in a fiery re-imagining of the world. Mostly written on the island paradise of Capri (the idyllic setting of the Oscar-winning movie Il Postino), Love Poems embraces the seascapes surrounding the poet and his love Matilde Urrutia, their waves and shores saturated with a new, yearning eroticism.

And when you appear

all the rivers sound

in my body, bells

shake the sky,

and a hymn fills the world.

Though universally acclaimed for his dazzling fictions, Jorge Luis Borges always considered himself first and foremost a poet. This new bilingual selection brings together some two hundred poems--the largest collection of Borges' poetry ever assembled in English, including scores of poems never previously translated. Edited by Alexander Coleman, the selection draws from a lifetime's work--from Borges' first published volume of verse, Fervor de Buenos Aires (1923), to his final work, Los Conjurados, published just a year before his death in 1986. Throughout this unique collection the brilliance of the Spanish originals is matched by luminous English versions by a remarkable cast of translators, including Robert Fitzgerald, Stephen Kessler, W. S. Merwin, Alastair Reid, Mark Strand, Charles Tomlinson, and John Updike.
